More baby boomers getting divorced

The divorce rate among older couples has skyrocketed during the last two decades in the U.S. Reports show that the divorce rate among baby boomers has doubled in the last 20 years, with one in four divorces involving people over the age of 50.

The increase in divorces among older couples is being called "gray divorce," and many studies have been published on why more couples are getting divorced despite being together for decades.

Studies have indicated several reasons for the increase in divorces among older couples. One of the reasons stated is that baby boomers grew up in a time when divorce was becoming more acceptable and they are becoming the first generation to get divorced and remarry.

Another reason is that people are living longer, healthier lives and couples decide that they don't want to spend their retirement in an unhappy relationship. Many older couples also think about getting divorced after their children move out of the house when they find that the children were the only thing that kept the marriage working.

Women are also earning more money than before and having their own professional careers. This means that women can support themselves and they don't have to rely on their husband for financial support.

Getting divorced at an older age can be challenging and there are several unique considerations to make during the divorce process. Baby boomers need to think about how divorce will impact their retirement plans and it is beneficial to contact a divorce attorney to discuss specific steps to take to ensure a secure financial path after the divorce.
