Staying married is a serious issue for many professional athletes

Texas residents may be interested in some of the issues that professional athletes run into when it comes to marriage and divorce. Due to the particular aspects of an athlete's lifestyle, many find out too late that marriage is not for them.

For the average American, the divorce rate is around 50 percent. However, divorce rates amongst professional athletes are reportedly between 60 and 80 percent. One family law attorney says that staying married as a professional athlete is difficult due to the amount of money that they make and the temptation that fans can bring on the road. This combined with the time spent away from home, the travel and the fame that comes from playing professional sports can cause great stress on a marriage. All of these things can make an athlete realize that the marriage was to the wrong person or that the athlete prefers the single life.

There are several examples of high-profile athlete divorces. For instance, golfer Greg Norman has been married twice more since divorcing his first wife of more than two decades in 2006. Tiger Woods' highly publicized affairs led to a divorce with his wife after six years of marriage. Woods agreed to pay his ex-wife $100 million, a sum that many who sympathized with her thought was insufficient.

Protecting a high-net worth person's assets during a divorce can be difficult without competent representation. An attorney with experience in family law could walk a person through the divorce process, such as any necessary complex asset division and valuation as well as spousal and child support agreements. The attorney may then be able to represent that person during divorce negotiations or in divorce court.
