What you might have in common with Brad and Angelina

The media is buzzing, this time based on true reports, because Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie are actually getting divorced. Source after source has confirmed that Jolie filed the divorce papers earlier this week, after a short separation between the famous duo.

Her doing so falls into a divorce norm that might surprise some people: more women file divorce papers than men. While we will likely never know exactly what caused or motivated the end of the celebrity marriage, we can look at other larger divorce trends according to sociological studies.

Researchers have asked divorced men and women why they split and found the following common reasons for divorce:

  • Cheating
  • Overall incompatibility
  • Drug/alcohol use
  • Growing apart from each other
  • Personality hardships
  • Bad communication
  • Abuse
  • Lost love

More women than men shared that infidelity was the main reason for their divorce, though that was still the top reported reason by men as well. The most common reason for divorce that men noted was the more vague "incompatibility."

Therefore, if "Brangelina's" pending high-profile divorce mirrors societal trends, one might predict that an affair may have taken place and that the couple was no longer compatible. This is just a theory, of course. But they have been married for more than a decade. They have several children. Their marriage began with drama surrounding it. And Jolie underwent serious surgery for medical reasons in 2013.

These aspects of life change people. They can change a couple's dynamics. These life matters can change individuals' priorities and passions. Anyone can relate to outgrowing a marriage, whether they are famous or not. The main difference in the Brangelina divorce will be the high value of the couple's estate

What is contributing or has contributed to the unhappiness in your marriage? Do you fit into the societal trends noted above? Despite studies' attempts to find commonalities among divorce in the U.S., we know that all divorce cases are unique.
