August Is Child Support Awareness Month

In Texas, child support is a fact of life for 1 in 4 children, according to stats from the Texas Attorney General’s Child Support Division (CSD).

In 2016 alone, the CSD collected more than $4 billion in child support for 957,000 Texas families. That’s a lot!

And because child support is such a far-reaching issue, at the Sisemore Law Firm we’re taking time this August to recognize Child Support Awareness Month. The national initiative was launched to help teach families about child support and the services available to help them.

Child Support in Texas

Bringing attention to this issue is so important that last year, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched a public service campaign for Child Support Awareness Month in Texas.

“Helping a child along life’s journey takes a lot, and children deserve the love and financial support of both their parents,” Paxton says in the PSA.

Why is Child Support Important?

Child support is important for custodial parents because it helps them financially, but it also has other important and far-reaching benefits, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

  • Child support reduces poverty and financial insecurity among children and custodial parents.
  • It reduces public spending on welfare by preventing single-parent families from entering the welfare system and helping them leave the system more quickly.
  • Child support collection positively affects family relationships and increases the involvement of noncustodial parents in children’s lives.

In 2008, 625,000 children would have been poor had they not received child support payments. And studies show that child support has a positive effect on academic achievement, and improves young children’s cognitive development, according to the NCSL.
